Crazy Diet Fads
Crazy Diet Fads
In our last post, titled “Diets Throughout History”, we took a look at some of the more fascinating, and downright weird, types of diets that people gladly accepted as viable at the time. From swallowing tapeworms to chewing your food a minimum of 100 times before swallowing, there have been no shortages of peculiar theories humans have concocted and tested out to no avail.
The rich and poor, educated and uneducated – it didn’t matter. Folks believe what they are told for the most part. And although our ability to know our own bodies and processes has significantly improved since practices like Fletcherism and the Hay Diet were all the rage, there is a lesson about each person needing to do their due-diligence when it comes to weight loss approaches.
Even in our previous post, we drew parallels between rubber being used for weight loss in folks’ knickers and corsets with people who are alive today who use rubber waste bands to promote localized toning and weight loss. Seriously, go search “waist trimmers” online, and you’ll find a hundred different brands of the product. That means people buy them and use them, in spite of the fact that there is no scientific evidence to support the theory that sweating in one area of your body will promote weight loss and toning.
To us at Springfield Weight Loss Center, the lesson there is that despite the fact that our methods to understand weight loss have improved, it hasn’t led to the death of diet fads with little research backing them. Weight loss clinics like ours might be something of an exception to the all-too-common business looking to make a quick buck with the newest weight loss pill. Likewise, weight loss surgery is another example of folks being sold a bill of goods without necessarily understanding important details concerning the procedure. For example, did you know that there is a laundry list of side-effects that can transpire after getting weight loss surgery? Some of them are listed below, just to give our readers an idea of what we are talking about.
- Malnutrtion
- Low blood sugar
- Hernias
- Infection
- Lung problems
- Respiratory issues
- Stomach perforation
- Dumping syndrome
- Blood clots
- Adverse reactions to anesthesia
- Gastrointestinal system leaks
- Bowel obstruction
- Gallstones
- Ulcers
- Vomiting
- And others
As we mention on our weight loss clinic site, we don’t bring these possibilities up as any sort of scare-tactic. We simply want to inform folks in Springfield and beyond about both misinformation and the withheld information that often occurs. We want people who are interested in losing weight that there are weight loss surgery alternatives. Here at Springfield Weight Loss Center, we take a measured approach, taking in the entire picture when it comes to individual clients. We consider each client’s metabolism, nutrition, and medical history while we formulate tailored weight loss plans for everyone of our clients. Our Business
As illuminating, and, perhaps, depressing, as it might be to devote an entire blog post about some of the absurd modern-day weight loss pills that exist, we want to take a more historical approach to this topic matter, which involves continuing to look at diet fads of the past. We aren’t in the business of disparaging specific companies; we just want to warn our readers and prospective clients that you have to be careful about what you choose to believe. People make unsubstantiated claims all the time. These claims turn into publicly accepted wisdom, because people will try a new, pain-free, and easy way to lose weight.
At our Springfield weight loss clinic, we talk about how our weight loss diet involves no exercise, no hunger, and no drugs. You can convert stored fat into energy without training for a marathon. You can eat an anti-inflammatory, healthy diet without feeling your empty stomach stuck against your spine. And you can increase your metabolism without the use of drugs. We have an advanced understanding of how one’s metabolism, nutrition, and weight loss all interact. We help you learn how you can burn more calories and lose weight without revolutionizing your lifestyle. Now, we aren’t claiming that each and every step of our weight loss program is a walk in the park – the phrase “nothing good comes easy” often rings true. We walk with you through every step of the way here at Springfield Weight Loss Center, so if you are interested in getting started right now, you can take advantage of our current special offer!
If, however, you are sitting there reading this post thinking to yourself, “I thought this was a post about crazy diet fads, and so far all I’ve gotten was some good points about weight loss surgery alternatives and how to avoid weight loss pill scams”, we would say two things. Firstly, that you have made an astute observation. And secondly, read on because we are about to get to our promised topic of the day, a continuation of crazy diet fads throughout history!
Crazy Diet Fads Continued
In 1820, Lord Byron promulgated the Vinegar and Water Diet, which, as you might be able to guess, involves the consumption apple cider vinegar mixed with drinking water. It sounds a bit too sour and acidic for our liking!
According to ABC News, a Venezuelan physician has performed 800 “tongue patch” procedures, which entails sewing a plastic-mesh patch onto a patient’s tongue. This makes it tough to eat or swallow. It’s a strange world we live in, folks.
The Last Chance Diet, made popular by its creator Roger Linn in the 1970s, involves drinking a daily liquid protein drink, giving you only 400 calories to work with. But this isn’t your average, store-bought chocolate protein drink. It was reported to have been made of leftover slaughterhouse byproducts, including hooves, hides, bones, horns, and tendons. We are sure about the rest of our readers, but that’s a hard pass for us!
In the 1930s, there existed “The Grapefruit Diet”, also known as the Hollywood diet. It was a diet that involved eating a grapefruit with every meal, coupled with a low-cal approach.
In the 1950s, there was The Cabbage Soup Diet, which, you guessed it, entails eating cabbage soup daily, combined with a low-cal diet. Promoters of the diet claimed a person can lose 10-15 pounds in one week! Impressive!
